Chamberlain Care emphasizes person-centered communication. Provide an example of using person-centered care in communicating to another who disagrees with you.
Person-centred care relies on effective communication, but few studies have explored this with a specific focus on older people. The main aim of the study is to generate knowledge on person-centred communication with older people in home healthcare services. Healthcare providers explore the patient's situation by listening and asking questions. They discuss care and treatment alternatives with the patient and they provide the patient with information.
There is growing evidence that person-centred care has a positive impact on different patient outcomes such as patient empowerment as a way of strengthening participation, the patient satisfaction, health and length of hospital stay.
To site an example of person centered care and ability to communicate and interact I give below a case study.
There was a person A, whose sister B, suddenly suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, she required emergency brain surgery. B spent 10 days sedated in the ICU. In her consciousness or sub-consiousness she appeared to pull at her breathing tube and IVs, which could effect her health or even her life. To protect her from doing this the nurses put her in soft restraints. This way she couldn’t tear away the life supports that were to help her. But he knew something the staff didn’t know. He knew that B has severely sensitive skin. As He watched my sister’s behaviors, He realized she was not really pulling at her breathing tube or IVs. What she was doing was trying to scratch her skin and remove items that were causing itches. Each day as Her condition brought progress and setbacks, setbacks and progress, He persuaded staff to treat the cause of her itching with antihistamine cream, and to protect her with a one-to-one nurse rather than restraints.By the time She made her way out of the ICU and into the neuro unit, she was able to shower, use her own soap, and wear her own clothes to reduce the itching.
Essential to this person-centred care is the providers’ ability to communicate and interact with the patient. Communication aims specifically at ensuring the healthcare provider's attention to the person and includes, sharing information and decisions, providing compassionate and empowering care, and being sensitive to patient needs.
