Question

The Bell Curve Chester High School started a new track team this fall. The coach r tested the speeds of all the students in September. The graph at right shows the results. September Speeds The data shows a normal distribution, which is oftei called a bell curve. Data in a normal distribution is equally spread to the left and to the right of the datas measure ot center. It is not skewed, or shifted away from the mean. In a normal distribution, most of the data values are near the mean, and a very small number of values are near the extremes April Speeds The coach analyzed the data to determine how to approach the task of creating a winning track team. Then he worked with the students for eight months and retested them. The graph at the right shows how the students performed in April.
27 Data Distributions How does the April graph compare with the September graph? Does it still show a normal distribution? What happened to the mean speed? Write a paragraph of 8 to 10 sentences comparing the April and September graphs. Use details to support your writing.

Answer #1

April graph is Left Skewed: It has a long left tail. It is negatively skewed since there is a long tail in the negative direction of the number line. The mean is to the left of the peak. Of the three measures of Central Tendency, the mode is the greatest, the mean is the least, and the median is in between.

i.e.,

mode > median > mean.

September graph shows a Normal Distribution. The graph is symmetric: One half of the distribution is a mirror image of the other half. The mean = median = mode is the central value.

For a certain law school, the entering students have an average LSAT score of about 700 with a standard deviation of about 40. The smoothed density histogram of the LSAT scores appears to follow a normal distribution. Sketch a smoothed density histogram (a bell-shaped curve) of the distributions for the LSAT scores. (For this problem, draw this on your own paper. You will not need to submit this graph.) Because this distribution is approximately normal, the mean is equal to...
