Trade secret may be anything like some process, formula, strategies etc… it varies business to business. It can be protected with nondisclosure agreement and owner must take steps to protect it. It definitely derives economic value from not being known to others because it is something which helps to survive against competitors and it is not compulsory to register with government but it must not be against business ethic and law, but must be fair.
