Answer #1

As here mentioned that Mrs. Johnson a 86 years old lady waiting to die as she does not want to take any treatment because she is not ready to take any treatment as she is at the last days of her life anyway. So she has decided like that mentally.Being with dying people is an integral part of nursing.Today's healthcare environment  conditions patients to view death as physiologic event not as a sacred passage of life. The Professional training program in Compassionate End life care explores us how we can create the safe passage for our patients and ourselves.

  • Here in this case Mrs.Johnson has to counsel for her health condition initially, she should be counselled to take the treatment required as per her health condition though she is at end days of her life /she rejected to take the treatment.
  • I would like to  counsel her by saying the value of every day in our lives before death comes to us.If u live everyday to the best of your ability, every day, even your final day of your life will be the best day of your life that you lived till your last breath.
  • Being in the present situation dissolves attention towards past or future so i would like to let her feel peaceful and relaxed in present condition by forgetting her future outcomes of her health condition.
  • Let her practice mindfulness which involves to calm herself from unwanted thoughts, detach herself from future outcomes.By this method she can control her thoughts from death and she will decide to take the required treatment.
  • I would like to create a positive environment around Mrs.Johnson by showing her some of the patients who are taking required treatment as they are also having some serious health condition even though they wanted enlighten their remaining days with positive attitude and make them happy and their families.
  • Let her allow to spend and speak with her loved ones as she is not ready to take the treatment, when she had a talk with her loved one she can be easily convinced to take the treatment and we can divert her decision towards death.
  • If she believed in God,I will try to divert her with some words related to life and its importance of each day which is gifted by God to ourselves.
  • As she said she is ready to die,i would like to counsel her just give an opportunity to yourself for taking good treatment if you won't recover then you can go with your decision.Because these many years she lived with a positive mindset as everyone may face some hurdles in their lives.Though with a positives attitude you have reached to this stage today. So give yourself one last chance to improve your health and take the treatment.
  • every patient will be with different attitude and condition,So we try to understand their physical and mental heath conditions when they have taken a serious decisions. We should counsel them properly with all positive ways we learnt and know during our training. So that they will definitely change their thoughts at any point of time throughout our counselling.
  • A nurse should have much patience and skillfulness to divert these type patients towards positive attitude.
