Answer #1

A student nurse should look for the following history in a patient who has delayed wound healing .

1)The patient has been a diabetic for 10 years:Diabetic is an endocrine disorder in which the body cannot utilize the available insulin or produce insulin this affects wound healing .The main reasons for delayed wound healing are diabetes makes the blood vessels stiff which leads to reduced blood circulation leading to poor transport of nutrients like oxygen, nutrients which can help in healing.Another reason for delayed wound healing is compromised immune system in which diabetes prevents The flow of white blood cells thus reducing the wound healing.diabetic neuropathy is another reason for delayed wound healing because of impaired nerves which reduces sensation ,this leads to missed wounds and delayed treatment process .

2)The patient smokes a pack of cigarettes daily :ciggrette smoking is related to delayed wound healing in many ways nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which narrows the blood vessels and thus reduce the blood flow which delays wound healing, carbon monoxide in the ciggrette reduce the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood ,oxygen is the main instrument for wound healing, nicotine delays redblood cells proliferation which again reduce the formation of healthy tissue, nicotine causes thrombosis of the peripheral vessels due to platelets aggregation which can lead to tissue ischemia and delayed wound healing

3)The patient has a history of heart disease :heart disease like coronary artery disease reduces the flow of blood due to narrow blood vessels this reducing the flow of nutrients to wounds thus delaying wound healing

So all these above history of a patient is important to determine the reasons for delayed wound healing

The other two options of being active without illness, and having three healthy meals everday will aid in wound healing
