Immunodiagnostic tests make use of immunology as a diagnostic tool. Immunodiagnostics use reaction between antigen and antibody to detect diseases.
Immunodiagnostic tests helps in diagnosis of various infectious, endocrine and neoplastic diseases.
Some common immunodiagnostic tests are immunofluorescence tests, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry.
1. Antigen antibody assay : it makes use of antigen antibody specificity. Immunologic tests use either antibodies to identifying circulating antigens in the blood or detecting antibodies produced by patient to fight the disease. ELISA, radioimmunoassay and flow cytometry use this method
2. Antigen antibody detection : detection methods like fluorescence, color linked enzyme reaction, radioisotope labelling to detect antigen antibody complexes.
3. Serological assay : for serology, the titre which is highest dillution of serum that still causes a positive response to the test is interpreted for results.
4. Immunohistochemistry : use antigen antibody reaction with the help of enzymatic reactions. Helps to identify certain markers.
5. Flow cytometry : it uses antibodies to detect the antigens in sample suspended in solution. It is used in hematologic diseases and malignancies.
6. Molecular techniques : it makes use of PCR and reverse PCR for detection of DNA and RNA.
