The ionic strength formula is as follows:

I = 1/2 ∑ (Ci Zi2 ).

where,

Ci =   the concentration of ith specie in moles / liter

Zi =  charge of ions.

  • The ionic strength of potable water and ground water is 0.001 - 0.02 M.
  • The ionic strength of seawater is 0.7 M.
