Electronic health records have become very popular in healthcare system. EHR have greatly improved quality of care and efficiency of the health care system. But EHR has also brought along with it some unintended consequences of the use of electronic documentation tools. These consequences are unintentional but may increase the cost of care for the organization and sometimes cause damage to the patient.
Some examples of the unintended consequences of the use of electronic documentation tools include :-
1. Changes in communication practices
more dependence on EHR has led to lack of communication between healthcare personnel and patient interactions. This can sometime cause errors. For example the two nurses exchanging their shift may not fully communicate the treatment line of patient assuming that she will read the EHR.
2. Employment of more resources to develop, implement and maintain electronic documentation tools
The EHR has many sophisticated systems and softwares to collect and record healthcare data. These sophisticated systems require skillfull, trained and specialist resources for their development, implementation and maintenance.
