MUMPS

An infectious disease caused by a specific virus usually affects the children of 5-15 years of age group, but no age group is exempted.

  • In US, 6369 new mumps cases are reported in the year 2016.
  • It can occur at any time in a year, peaks in late winter to early spring.
  • Worldwide infection rates are from 100 to 1000 per 100,000 population.

How it spreads?

  • Droplet infection
  • Direct contact with infected person
  • Saliva, articles used by infected person and air borne droplets spread the disease.
  • Takes 2-4 weeks to show the signs and symptoms if infected.
  • Overcrowding spreads the infection to more people.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Throat irritation
  • Earache

  • Pain behind the ear on chewing and swallowing
  • Swelling around either one or both cheek area.

Mumps

Management

  • Treat the signs and symptoms by using medicines for fever and pain.
  • Bed rest
  • Liquid diet as there is difficulty in chewing
  • Avoid sour foods as it causes excessive saliva and difficulty in swallowing.
  • Mouth wash using warm salt water.
  • Take plenty of fluids

Preventive Measures

  • Immunization must be taken at the ages recommended by your consulting doctor.

  • Vaccine is available in combined form which prevents multiple infectious diseases.
  • Keep the infected person away from any direct contact with other family members as much as possible
  • Proper disinfection of the articles used by the infected person.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene to prevent the spread of disease.
