Therapeutic use of penicillin: it is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Action : It prevents peptidoglycan from cross-linking properly in the last stages of bacterial cell wall synthesis.weakens the cell wall and causes the bacterium to lyse, or burst open, because of osmotic pressure.
Adverse effects : Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, mild skin rash, twitching or muscle spasm, diarrhea, injection site reactions.
Nursing intervention : assess allergy to drugs, kidney problems, decrease the effects of birth control, IV dose, electrolyte imbalance, drug interactions with antacids, anticoagulants, PO on empty stomach.
Medications/Food/Environment: do not take any heavy food like full of carbohydrates and others
Medication administration: The liquid form of penicillin is best taken with a full glass (8 ounces) of water on an empty stomach (either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals)
