z- score of a given value tells you how many standard deviations the value is above or below the mean value of the data set.

A z- score of -2 means the given value is less than the mean value by 2 standard deviations.

A value whose z- score is less than -2 is a value in the data set with less probability of occurrence because as per the empirical rule, if the data is normally distributed, only 5% of the values in a data set will be outside the 2 standard deviations mark.
