You are studying a population of ducks. There are 10 ducks in the population and you are studying how much they weigh in pounds. In this population there are 5 ducks that weigh 5 pounds, and 5 ducks that weigh 4 pounds. You take a sample of 4 ducks of the following weights: 4,4,4,5. If you calculate the sample mean weight of these four ducks, what would be your sampling error?

Answer #1

Sampling error is the difference between the value of sample mean and population mean.

Sample mean

4+4+4+5

sample mean = 4. 25

Population mean

5+5+ 5+5+5+4 + 4+4+44 10

population mean = 4.5

Sampling error = population mean - sample mean

= 4.5 - 4.25

= 0.25

Dr. I.C. Trout, a professional ichthyologist, is studying a population of catfish with his assistant, Etta Bass. Trout and Bass have established the mean weight for a catfish is 3.2 pounds, with a standard deviation of 0.8 pounds. Weights of catfish are normally distributed. Solve the following: A. What is the probability that a catfish will weigh more than 4.4 pounds? B. What is the probability that a catfish will weigh between 3 and 5 pounds? C. What is the...

    1. There is a population of three people: Xerxes, Yasmin, and Zoe. [Note: this is a population, not a sample.] They are asked how many books they read last month. Xerxes read 2 books, Yasmin read 4 books, and Zoe read 12 books. We are too lazy to poll the entire population, so we take a sample of two (with replacement and order matters). Please draw the sampling distribution of the mean ofa sample of size two. 2. Continuing with...
