Job descriptions of various members of the nursing staff in clinics with comments:

1. NP (Nurse Practitioner):

  • Analyze patients' history, symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic results to develop apt diagnoses.
  • Instruct patients about medication regimens and possible side effects and interactions with food supplements, other medications etc.
  • Find out and respond to adverse medication reactions.
  • Develop proper treatment plans based on medical rationale, patient care standards, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Diagnose and treat acute healthcare problems consisting of illnesses, injuries, and infections.
  • Instruct patients about self-management of illnesses and give tailor-made solutions to each one.
  • Order/perform/interpret the results of laboratory tests, imaging studies etc.
  • Prescribe medications based on patients' requirements.

Comment: NPs are a group of highly-qualified nursing professionals with dedication and integrity. They are of great help when there is a shortage of physicians.

2. RN (Registered Nurse):

  • Administer OTC and prescription medications as prescribed.
  • Execute orders of physicians, give IVs, perform procedures and treatments, perform assigned tests, and document treatment as per hospital strategy, state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Order, decipher, and evaluate tests to recognize and assess patient conditions.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, and response to care provided.
  • Make patient care management decisions with sound judgment.
  • Render primary care and emergency care for occupational and non-occupational conditions.
  • Coordinate with the nursing care team to design the patient Plan of Care.
  • Manage the assisting personnel and maintain professional nursing standards.
  • Guiding and instructing patient families in aftercare measures.

3. LPN (licensed practical nurses):

  • Proper planning and management of patient care according to patients' requirements.
  • Conduct patients' interviews and record their medical history.
  • Obtaining vital signs.
  • Giving medication injections.
  • Verifying patient charts for proper updations.
  • Observing patients' conditions and reactions to treatments and to their recording.

4. Nurse Case Manager:

  • Overall management of nursing and ancillary staff to create a professional healthcare environment.
