Cover letters and resumes are an important part to the job hunt process. Sometimes cover letters are the most important part of your application. Your resume is a way to market yourself to potential employers, so it needs to be eye-catching, up-to-date, accurate, and appropriate for the audience. For this activity you will receive a classmate’s cover letter in class which you will review and give feedback. Put yourself in the employer’s shoe – would you bring this candidate in for an interview? Your cover letter will need to be submitted in Blackboard as specified in the syllabus. The cover letter should be: 1. Appropriate format 2. 1 page max; 12 pt font; single space 3. Be descriptive 4. Be specific and custom to the position you are applying for 5. Candidate should describe how their skills matches the requirements of the position 6. Should have a positive closing which provides contact information You will give the cover letter a rating of one of the below scores. Make sure to also provide reasoning as to why you rated it this way: • 3: PERFECT cover letter. I would bring the candidate in for an interview! I think they would be a great fit! • 2: Good cover letter. I would have liked it to be more specific to the position they are applying for. I still want to bring this candidate in and meet them in person. • 1: Poor cover letter. The cover letter is not specific to the specific position and I can easily tell that it is a generic cover letter.

Answer #1

If I would be in the employer's shoe , then I would select the Candidate (my classmate) on the basis of his cover letter . If the cover letter suits the organisation needs and requirements, only then I would fix an interview with the person .

  • If the cover letter of the classmates is PERFECT and all the requirements are fulfilled , then I will call upon him for the interview as an employer . The rating will be 5 as the cover letter is perfect . Generally , the employer also wants to hire a person who suits the organisation and the skills and competencies of that person is in fully need of the organisation.
  • If the cover letter is GOOD , then as an employer, I would shortlist the resume and would call him for interview . I would also ask him the specification of the person as all his requirements and skills are not properly shown in the resume. I will rate the resume or cover letter 3.5 .
  • If the cover letter is BAD , it means that the person doesn't fulfill the exact requirements of the organisation. Thats why , it is reasonable to put that cover letter aside by saying that it is generic and in no need to the company. I would rate such cover letter 2 .
