Fireworks contain metal salts, fuel, an oxidizing agent and a binder to hold them. Metal salts present in the fireworks contain electrons. When fireworks are exposed to fire, extreme heating is caused by the fuel and oxidising agent. This causes the electrons present in the atoms of metal compounds to absorb energy. This leads to a transition of the electrons from a lowest energy state to the excited higher energy state. When these electrons transition back to their ground state, they emit excess energy in the form of light.

Each atom emits light of a different energy and hence different frequency. This is responsible for the different colors seen during fireworks. For example: Sodium nitrate is used for the yellow light.
