SUMMARY

1.5 million fracture every year in United states is due to osteoporosis, majority occurring in post menopausal women. So prevention of fractures in the near by future was considered as the primary goal for the study.Priority risk factor for fracture is identified as low Bone Mineral Density (BMD).Postmenopausal women whose bone density T score of -2.5 or less showed increased risk of fracture.Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) developed by World Health Organization (WHO) was used.

A group(active treatment group and placebo group) of patients were selected to be treated non-pharmacological and pharmacological measures. Two randomized controlled trials were used. When treated for 3 years, atypical fractures seem to be reduced in women taking biphosphonates and denosumab. A  total calcium intake of 1000 to 1500 mg per day and a total vitamin D intake of 600 to 800 I U per day along with Increased physical activity, avoidance of smoking and alcohol intake were also recommended.Suggestions were done to discontinue biphosphonates after 5 years of treatment as a result of follow-up BMD measurements.
