Question

Key: Carbohydrates contain 4 kcalories per gram, protein contains 4 kcalories per gram, and fat contains 9 kcalories per gram. To calculate the grams of protein, carbohydrate or fat, (1) multiply the total kcals of the food by the percentage of each (protein, carb, fat) to get the percentage of kcals (protein, carb, fat). Then divide by the kcals/gram to get the grams. Calculate the grams of protein, carbohydrate and fat in a meal that is 600 calories and is 15% protein, 60% carbohydrate and 25% fat. Show your work.

Key: Carbohydrates contain 4 kcalories per gram, protein contains 4 kcalories per gram, and fat contains 9 kcalories per gram. To calculate the percentage of kcalories from protein, carbohydrate or fat, (1) determine the total kcalories in the food (calculate the kcals of protein, carbohydrate and fat and add them together) and (2) to determine the percentages of each divide the kcalories in the individual component (protein, carbohydrate or fat) by the total kcalories in the food, and multiply by 100. Calculate the energy (total kcalories) in a bean and cheese burrito which contains 55 gm carbohydrate, 15 gm protein and 12 gm fat. Calculate the percentage of protein, carbohydrate and fat in the burrito. Show your work.

Answer #1

Total of 600 calories is provided by a meal

15% of the total calories are provided by protein

60% of the total calories are provided by carbohydrate

25% of the total calories are provided by fat

Protein -

15 x 600 = 100% = 90 Kcal

so, total protein provides 90 calories

1 gm protein provides 4 Kcal

90kcal = 4kcal/gm = 22.5gm

Ans - the meal contains 22.5 grams of protein

Carbohydrate -
60 x 600kcl = 100 = 360kcal

so, total carbohydrate provides 360Kcal

1 gm of carb provides 4 kcal energy

360kcal = 4kcal/gm = 90gm

Ans - the meal contains 90gm of carbohydrate

Fat -

25 x 600kcal = 100 = 150kcal

So, total fat provides 150kcal

1 gm of fat provides 9 kcal

150kcal = 9kcal/gm = 16.6gm

Ans - the meal contains 16.6 gms of Fat

Q no 2

Bean and Cheese contain 55gm carb, 15 gm protein, and 12 gm fat.

55 gm carbohydrate will give 220 kcal

55gm x 4kcal/gm = 220kcal

15 gm protein will give 60 kcal

15gm x 4kcal/gm = 60 Kcal

12 gm fat will give 108 kcal

12gm x 9kcal/gm = 108K cal

Total of 388 calories are provided by bean and cheese

Carbohydrate provides 56.70%

220kcal = 388kcal x 100 = 56.70%

Protein provides 15.46%

60kcal = 388kcal x 100 = 15.46%

Fat Provides 27.83%

108kcal = 388kcal x 100 = 27.83%
