Title: Research utilization in nursing practice
Background of the study:
Research scholars continuously express their concern about use of best available scientific research evidence to guide nurses clinical practice. The disparity between the availability of research evidence and its utilisation in practice is often leads to research- practice gap. Despite increased knowledge of benefits of adopting a research based approach to nursing care it remains slow, unavailable and haphazard. As a result patients not received best available care from nurses.
Review of literature:
Victoria L champion conducted a correlational study on variables related to research utilization in nursing: an empirical investigation. The purpose of the study is to identify variables which were related to utilization of research in the clinical area. A convenience sample of 59 nurses from a community hospital in the southwest part of USA was utilized for the sample. Results indicated that attitide and availability were related to research utilization ( R=0.65,p0.00). It is concluded that results from this study can be used to develop strategies to increase research utilization.
In the month of octOcto 2012 another study published on on factors influencing the development of evidencw based practice among nurses: a self report survey. The aim of the study is to examine factors influencing the implementation of evidence based practice among nurses in a large norwegian university hospital. Cross sectional data was collected from 407 nurses using norwegian version of developing evidence based practice questionaire(DEBP). The results showed that self reported skills in finding, reviewing and using different sources of evidence were positively associated with the use of research evidence and inversely related to barriers in use of research evidence. It concludes that skills in evidence based practice seem to reduce barriers to using research evidence and to increase use of research evidence in clinical practice.
Stateme of the problem: Factors afftecting research utilization among nurses working at selected health care settings.
Aim/ objective: to investigate most important factors influencing research utilization from the nurses perspectives
Research methodology:
Research approach: A quantitative research approach was adopted
Research design: A cross sectional survey research design was adopted
Population: Staff nurses were selected as study population
Target population: staff nurses working at present in any health care setting were the target population
Accessible population: staff nurses working in a specific locality
Sample: registered staff nurses working at selected health care settings
Sample size: a sample of 590( estimated by power analysis) registered staff nurses
Description of the tool: a structured questionaire was adopted to collect data from the sample. It includes 2 parts
Part-1: structured questionaire on socio demographic data includes name, age gender, educational qualification, work experience, work area etc
Part-2 : structured questionaire and interview shedule on factors influencing research utilization
Plan for Data analysis: descriptive and inferential statistics will be adopted to analyse the data
Descriptive statistics: frequency distribution, central tendency- socio demographic data and questionaire
Inferential statistics- chi- square - association of demographic variables with questionaire
Expected outcome: at the end of the research facilitating factors and barriers were explored and the research findings will expected to enhance research utilization by the nurses.

Directions What is a research proposal? The purpose of a research proposal is to identify and formulate questions that arise from nursing practice and to design a research project to study the identified problem. The goal of a research proposal is to present and justify a research idea you have and to present the practical ways in which you think this research should be conducted. Research proposals contain extensive literature reviews and must provide persuasive evidence that there is a...
