Read Case Study #3 and answer the following questions:

What should the nurse tell KW's mother about the reason why she should not use the steroid cream on KW's face? KW's mother has been exclusively breastfeeding up to this point, but she planned to introduce solid foods this month. Now she wonders if solid foods will make KW's rash worse. How should the nurse respond to this question?

Steroids should not be used on face of child as applying steroids inappropriately or in large amount or very frequently can stunt the baby's growth as absorption of steroids in the child's skin is very high and it easily goes to blood stream. So as a result the natural steroids of body does not build up and thus weaken baby's immune system and growth. It also increase the chance of cataract if used near eyes.

before introducing solid foods to KW who already has skin rashes things to remember are-

1. dont give more than one food at once. Atfirst try one food for 4-5days then add another food as this will help the mother to understand which food will cause rash more. So dont mix up..

2.dont stop the food about which the mother is assured that it is safe doesn't cause rashes to her baby.

3. Before trying whole milk consult with doctor as milk allergies are common.Adding yoghurt and cheese to the diet is safer as these proteins are likely to break down.

4.mother should always be careful before introducing foods to baby like milk, egg, fish, peanuts, shellfish, wheat etc as these causes rashes very commonly.

5. Mother should always check for rashes after few minutes or within few hours of giving any food.
