Case Study

Two new associate-degree graduates were hired for the pediatric unit. Both worked three 12-hour shifts a week; Jan worked the day-to-evening shift and Rosemary worked the night shift. Whenever their shifts connected, they would compare notes on their experience. Jan felt she was learning rapidly, gaining clinical skills and beginning to feel at ease with her colleagues.

Rosemary, however, still felt unsure of herself and often isolated. There have been times that she was the only registered nurse on the unit all night. The aides and LPNs were very experienced, but Rosemary feels she is not ready for that kind of responsibility. Rosemary knows she must speak to the nurse manager about this, but she's called several times, and she's never available. The shift assignments are left in the staff lounge by an assistant.

1. In the given case the major issue is due to ineffective leadership demomstrated by the organization's leaders and managers. It is seen that the two associates were hierd one having the day shift was getting better experineces and learning whereas the otjer one Rosemary having the night shift faced issues. In this case the nurse manager has failed ro act appropriately and also Rosemary failed ro report the difficulties she is facing to appropriate authority.

2. The nurse manager in this case has demonstrated the trancriptional leadershio style, where Jan who was providinf maximum practice in day time was provided proper guidance and opportunities but the night staff was deprived due to inavailability. This kind of leadership is not adequate in healthcare settinf where the learning ans knowledge are important aspects.

3. The leadership presented here is not effective, the practices shares by Jan and Rosemary are adequate ans proves ro be beneficial for their professional development but the leadership limitations demonstrated by nurse manager is not appropriate. Rosemary should report this inadequacy in services to a higher authority or any concerned official to achieve better guidance and be able to promote better service delivery.
