Case Study

Two new associate-degree graduates were hired for the pediatric unit. Both worked three 12-hour shifts a week; Jan worked the day-to-evening shift and Rosemary worked the night shift. Whenever their shifts connected, they would compare notes on their experience. Jan felt she was learning rapidly, gaining clinical skills and beginning to feel at ease with her colleagues.

Rosemary, however, still felt unsure of herself and often isolated. There have been times that she was the only registered nurse on the unit all night. The aides and LPNs were very experienced, but Rosemary feels she is not ready for that kind of responsibility. Rosemary knows she must speak to the nurse manager about this, but she's called several times, and she's never available. The shift assignments are left in the staff lounge by an assistant.

1. Initiative , guidance , co- operation is needed in every learning . Same is the situation with Rosemary , problem is from both sides Roseberry and also her nurse incharge . 3 continuous night shift is the usual one in every hospital . Rosemary should take initiative to learn the skills and also the nurse in charge should provide her guidance , ask her if she has any problem in the shift . Many times Rosemary wanted to meet nurse manager but she was not available. In this case both the staff and nurse manger has failed to act but mai my nurse manger should make available herself to meet her staffs and solve their problems

2. Rosemary has laissez - faire leadership style as she does not want to take any responsibility , all tasks are handed over to the junior staffs and they are looking after it and the nurse manger has autocratic type of leadership style as she just order the duties ,does not take her staffs opinions to make any decisions . She holds all authority and responsibilities .

3. Both Nurse manger and Rosemary should have a Democratic type of leadership , in which they should hold the authority and responsibility at their levels and involve their subordinate staffs in making any decisions rather than making her own decision and team work should be encouraged .
