ANSWER:

when one parent (it may be father or mother) is having sickle cell disease then each child has the chance to get sickle cell trait. it doesnt mean that only male child is affected.

RATIONALE:

  • there is 5-scenario of sickle cell gene:
  1. when both parents are affected with sickle cell disease then each child will have the disease.
  2. when only one parent is having the diseasee then each child will have the sickle cell trait.
  3. when both parents have sickle cell trait then each child have 50% chance of sickle cell trait, 25% chances of sickle cell disease and 25% chances of normal Hb%.
  4. when only one parent have sickle cell trait then each child has 50% chances of normal haemoglobin and 50% chances of having sickle cell trait.
  5. when one parent has sickle cell trait and one parent has sickle cell disease then each child has 50% chances of sickle cell trait and 50% chance of sickle cell disease.
  • sickle cell trait means that a person is inherited a sickle cell gene from one of his parents. this type of sickle cell trait does not have any symptoms of sickle cell disease, and can live a normal life. repeated doctor consultation is required during antenatal period. it is possible for doctor to identify sickle cell disease before birth by using a sample of amniotic fluid or tissue taken from placenta.
