Answer #1

Employed

Unemployed

Not in labor force

Chung

Bruce

Brian

Sarah

James

Explanation:

Part-time workers are also considered employed by BLS. So, Chung is employed.

In order to be unemployed, a person must not have a job, should be willing to work and should have searched for work in the last four weeks. So, Bruce is unemployed but Brian (looked for work 6 weeks ago) and James (looked for work 2 years ago) are not in the labor force.

Sarah is a retiree and does not have an intention to work. So, she is not in the labor force.

Simply counting the number of unemployed workers will not necessarily give the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the most accurate indication of the extent of underemployment in the economy. Some part-time workers will be counted as employed even if they'd like to work full-time. Furthermore, some jobless workers will not qualify as unemployed because they have given up on their job search, frustrated with their inability to find work. Fortunately, the BLS can use the information provided in the household...
