Routine activities theory requires for a crime to occur: a motivated offender with criminal intentions and the ability to act on these inclinations, a suitable victim or target, and the absence of a capable guardian who can prevent the crime from happening,coming together in time and space.

Routine activities theory is a theory of criminology that for a crime to occur, these elements must be present: (1) a person motivated to commit the offense, (2) a vulnerable victim who is available, and. (3) insufficient protection to prevent the crime.

Routine activity theory is that crime is relatively unaffected by social causes such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment.

Crime Pattern theory is a way of explaining why crimes are committed in certain areas. Crime is not random, it is either planned or opportunistic. According to the theory crime happens when the activity space of a victim or target intersects with the activity space of an offender.

Victimization increases because prior history of DV/IPV, being female, young age, heavy alcohol and drug use, high-risk sexual behavior, witnessing or experiencing violence as a child, being less educated, unemployment.
