Customers did not explicitly want an iPod as most customers only wanted a better version of walkman and they could not envisage a product which was as different as an iPod. This is due to the limitation of the general public to envisage technological disruption or breakthrough that could happen.

Similarly, customers could not have imagined a handheld computer would be possible and instead they could only have anticipated incremental improvements in the mobile phone. But a smartphone was possible due to ingenious product designers and breakthrough in technology.
