Diabetes Mellitus is metabolic disorder caused due to 1. Inadequate insulin production, 2. Lack of insulin production and 3. Cells insensitivity to insulin. Due to these three reasons, the glucose from the blood is unable to be taken up by the cells leading to increase blood glucose levels and deprivation of cells from energy.

American Diabetes Association offers simple rules while setting up a plate for diabetic patients.

1. Half plate- nonstarchy vegetables eg carrots, spinach

2. Quarter plate with Protein such as chicken, fish, lean meat

3. Last quarter plate with whole grain items such as brown rice.

Include good fats such as nuts, dry fruits, avocados and also can rake drink in the form of unsweetened tea, coffee, diary product or water.

As a part of number of meals, there are diverse opinion which says three times meals on specified timing or small frequent diet to keep up with glucose control throughout the day.

Menu planning should be done according to persons body built and activity level so that blood glucose would be efficiently be utilized by the body. The amount of calories taken should be monitored closely.

To slow the release of glucose into the blood, it is good to include proteins with carbohydrates which can help in delaying The surge rise in glucose. Proteins not only help in delaying but also help in providing steady glucose supply to body and feeling of satiety after eating.

Fats also help in delayed breakdown and maintaining the glucose levels in body. Good fats should be taken and plant sources of fats are my h better than animal based fats.

Carbohydrates which are complex in nature should be included to have a steady increase in glucose levels. Complex carbohydrates includes whole grain, quinoa, Whole wheat, lentils etc.

The main points to be considered is adequate diet, exercises and avoiding of simple sugars that can increase the surge in blood glucose should be considered.
