The Miami Herald test is a method for determining whether or not your actions as a manager or employee are ethical. If everything you did or said was printed in the Miami Herald, exactly how it happened, would you be comfortable with your friends and relatives reading about it? If not, you are probably treading on unethical grounds. This test is so effective because people’ ethics vary, and so it is often a difficult concept to define, but by defining it through this lens, hopefully it becomes more clear to you.

1.Choose an ethical dilemma you have faced in hospitality, or you are worried about facing.

2.Explain if this is a real or potential ethical dilemma and why it is difficult for you in one to two paragraphs.

3. Then conduct enough research to identify the proper way to handle this situation.

Answer #1

Ethical dilemmas are not very uncommon in healthcare sector. Once or then a nurse comes across dilemma between the code of ethics and actual practice. The answer for the questions can be enlisted as:

1. One of the usual ethical dilemmas which I have faced in hospitality is that related to REFUSAL OF VACCINATION BY PARENTS IN PAEDIATRICS.

2. It is a POTENTIAL ETHICAL DILEMMA, as this scenario doesnot create problems currently, but has a potential to become a serious threat even.

According to practice guidelines, the parents have the right to decide about the vaccination in paediatrics. The pessimistic interferences of the social media as well as advice from an ignorant category of people who does not know the scientific clarifications about any queries related to the importance of vaccination usually mislead the parents to avoid vaccinations in their children. A nurse is supposed to leave this to the decision of the parents in one side, and is concerned about the well being of the child on the other side. Protecting his/her ethics, she should leave it for the decision of parents, but taking the health of the baby in to concern, he/she cannot neglect the vaccination as a nurse knows that a child who has not vaccinated will have lesser immunity than other children against specific diseases for which the vaccines are meant to prevent.

If an unvaccinated child 'A' and a vaccinated child 'B', both are affected from a disease, say 'X'; the chance for quicker recovery is more in child B than A, where as the higher rate of morbidity and mortality is suspected in child A which can again be a threat if the disease is easily contagious.

3. The point to keep in mind while tackling this situation is, giving awareness with lucid and possible evidences can clarify the anxiety and anticipation in minds of the parents regarding the side effects and adverse reactions after vaccination about which they are usually concerned and reach a decision not to vaccinate their child. A nurse should explain about the following facts:

  • Indication of the specific vaccine
  • How does vaccine act in prophylaxis of diseases
  • How does vaccine boost up kid's immunity
  • Safety of vaccination
  • Expected mild side effects like redness at the site of injection, low grade fever etc., which may get subsided without much delay
  • How does negligence on vaccination create problems in future
