Question

9. A crane is to lift 2000 kg of material to a height of 150 m in 1 min at a uniform rate. What electric power is required to drive the crane motor if 35 percent of the electric power is converted to mechanical power? (is it reasonable to neglect the kinetic energy in this process?)

Answer #1

given
m = 2000 kg
h = 150 m
t = 1 min = 60 s

wer know,
mechanical power required, P = Workdone/time taken

= m*g*h/t

= 2000*9.8*150/60

= 49000 W

35% of electrical power = mechanical power

0.35*electrical power = mechanical power

electrical power = mechanical power/0.35

= 49000/0.35

= 140000 W <<<<<<<<<------------------Answer

    QUESTION 5 (100 marks) (a) A crane is to be used to lift materials at a construction site. The crane is composed of a vertical mast 60 m high, a horizontal jib (B-D) 20 m long and a counter-jib (A-B) 4 m long. The combined weight of the counter-jib plus the counterweight provides a load of 18,000 N at point A. The weight of the jib provides a load of 5,200 N at point c. Note: not to scale 20m...

    1) A space shuttle without fuel weighs 75,000 kg. The international space station is 408 km in the sky. It will reach this altitude in roughly 450 seconds. Neglecting the weight of fuel (which is a complex calculation as it is used up by the flight), as well as any reduction to the force of gravity at that height, calculate: (A) The potential energy of the space shuttle at the height of the ISS (B) the work needed to get...
