Toddler 1-3 yrs

Because they still have fetal hemoglobin and baby or fetal hemoglobin protects the red blood cells from sickling. When the infant is around 4 to 5 months of age, the baby or fetal hemoglobin is replaced by sicklehemoglobin and the cells begin to sickle.

Aspirin is used in kawasaki disease because:

  • at high doses, aspirin is an anti-inflammatory (it reduces swelling)
  • at low doses, aspirin is an antiplatelet (it prevents blood clots forming)

Febrile is the most common cause when a child has infection with high fever

wheezing is common in asthma because of bronchoconstriction
