Iodine deficiency is still a problem even though the government imports iodized salt because of following reasons:-

a) Insufficient administration of iodized salt during pregnancy and lactation.

b)Weak monitoring mechanisms

c)Gaps in supply and distribution of the salt

d)Minimal awareness activities

e)Poor political will

f) Occurrence of adverse side effects secondary to the iodized salt administration ( viz.iodine-induced hyperthyroidism in patients with autonomous nodular goitre, iodine induced thyroiditis, and an increased prevalence of occult papillary carcinoma)
