We have to calculate diffusion per minute for every 15 minute step. And then we have to average this to get average diffusion rate in mm/min.
(6)For methylene blue,
From 15 to 30 min, net diffusion=(2-2)/15 mm/min
= 0 mm/min
From 30 to 45 min, net diffusion=(2-2)/15 mm/min=0 mm/min
From 45 to 60 min, net diffusion=(3-2)/15 mm/min
=0.066 mm/min
So the average rate of diffusion for all three steps in case of methylene blue=(0+0+0.066)/3= 0.022 mm/min(Ans)
(4)Similarly for KMnO4,
From 15 to 30 min, net diffusion= (8-2)/15 mm/min
= 0.40 mm/min
From 30 to 45 min, net diffusion=(11-8)/15 mm/min
=0.20 mm/min
From 45 to 60 min, net diffusion= (12-11)/15 mm/min
= 0.066 mm/min
So the average rate of diffusion for all three steps in case of KmnO4,
=(0.40+0.20+0.066)/3 mm/min
=0.666/3 mm/min
=0.222 mm/min (Ans).
(1) so clearly by comparing the average rate of diffusion we can say that potassium permanganate or KMnO4 has diffused more rapidly.
(2) For two substance 1 and 2,
r1/r2 = √(M2/M1)
Where r1= rate of diffusion of substance 1
r2= rate of diffusion of substance 2.
M2= molecular weight of substance 2.
M1= molecular weight of substance 1
