One of the highly acute infectious diseases of childhood caused by a specific virus of the group myxoviruses. It is associated with high morbidity and mortality in developing countries.

Measles is endemic virtually in all parts of the world. It tends to ocvur in epidemics when the proportion of susceptible children reaches about 40percent.When the disease is introduced into a virgin community more than 90 percent of that community will be infected. While measles is now rare in industrialized countries, it remains a common illness in many developing countries. The challenges for measles elimination includes weak immunization system, highly infectious nature of measles, populations that are inaccessible due to conflict, the increasing refusal of immunisation by some population, the changing epidemiology of measles which has lead to increased transmission among adolescents and adults. Building on the previous WHO and UNICEF strategy and recognizing the burden of congenital rubella syndrome and availability of combination vaccines, the Measles initiative has developed a 2012-2020 Global measles and Rubella strategic plan.
