KEY NURSING MANAGEMENT CONCERNS OF THE PATIENT WITH THE SKELETAL TRACTION :

  • Always assess the the site for any compartment syndrome.
  • Administer analgesic in case of pain.
  • Monitor patient's vital signs and document it
  • Make sure that the traction is placed properly and with the advised weight.
  • The nurse will prevent any bed sore as the patient will be immobile.
  • Taking care of the skin as it may tear due to traction.

METHODS NURSES NEED TO USE TO AVOID DISLOCATION AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY :

  • Explain patient not to move the hip.
  • The traction bag should not be touching the floor or rest anywhere it should be hanging in the air.
  • Provide support to the pressure points to prevent pressure ulcer.
  • Check for blood circulation as it can be blocked.
  • Monitor for any edema in the area.
  • Maintain patient's personal hygiene.

INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED FOR HOME CARE AFTER DISCHARGE :

  • Explain the relatives how to set the traction.
  • Explain about the use of sand bag or the weight.
  • Explain pain management at home.
  • An air bed or air mattress may be required to prevent any bed sores as the patient will be in bed rest for months.
  • Explain how to maintain hygiene at home.
  • Inform immediately to the nearest healthcare if the patient feels numb, swelling at the site.
