This week's discussion forum will give you an opportunity to explore more fully your own thoughts and feelings around suicide. After you've watched the interview of Major General Mark Graham, whose son killed himself while at college, I want you to imagine General and Mrs. Graham at a bereavement support group that you are running.

  • What would you say to them after they revealed their story to the group? What words of comfort might you offer them?
  • What additional resources are out there for bereaved parents that you could connect them to?
  • What thoughts and feelings are evoked in you when you hear of a physically healthy young man, who has so much loving support and many resources, killing himself?

Answer #1

After watching the interview of Major General Mark Graham, I feel no words of condolence could overcome the loss he and Mrs. Graham had. Keeping this in mind and after welcoming them to our group, the first thing I would like to say is "I am sorry for your loss." Then I would like to extend my bereavement group's support with the words "we all are here to support you and share your feelings." After that, I would ask them to share their views on depression and suicide from depression and seek assistance from them in executing the functions of our bereavement group. Then finally after listening to them, I would share my views with the introductory line, "many of us here in this group are people who have been through similar losses and this is something that unites us and makes us live for the cause of suicide prevention."  There are articles, blogs, books, interviews, websites, online groups, and organizations for bereaved parents that I could connect them to.

Thoughts and feelings in my mind when I heard of a physically healthy young man, who had so much loving support and many resources, killing himself, are numerous and shocking. Before any other thought came to my mind, I felt shocked and reactionless without any movement and hardly any breathing for a minute or two. I felt as if I lost one of my dear ones. After the initial state of shock, when I recovered I just had to consider having a glass of water before anything else. Along with this, it took me back to those days when I lost a dear one to suicide. After that, I felt pity and sorry for the young man and his relatives who despite having so much loving support and many resources, failed to cope up with stress and/or depression and ended his life. It also gave me enough strength to support his relatives who were in a state of shock, which could lead them to suicide.
