This week's discussion forum will give you an opportunity to explore more fully your own thoughts and feelings around suicide. After you've watched the interview of Major General Mark Graham, whose son killed himself while at college, I want you to imagine General and Mrs. Graham at a bereavement support group that you are running.

1. What would you say to them after they revealed their story to the group?

2. What words of comfort might you offer them?

3. What additional resources are out there for bereaved parents that you could connect them to?

4. What thoughts and feelings are evoked in you when you hear of a physically healthy young man, who has so much loving support and many resources, killing himself?

Answer #1

Suicide is one of the most common and biggest cause of death in adolescent people. They opt for suicide for various different reasons such as showing off their bravery, dealing off with their problems, threatening their parents, peer pressure, or various other reasons.

1. After they reveal their storyt about their son and about his mental illness with which he was fighting, I would congratulate them for being brave and for being able to discuss about their most fearful and most dreadful situation with the group. I would also tell them that their contribution towards the society and to make it a better place to discuss about mental illness will always save a life.

2. My word of comfort for them would be, your son was struggling and was fighting with a very horrible condition and now he is very happy and at peace. He must be very proud of his parents for doing all these good works and contributions towards the society. And with all the community awareness and education your son will always be remembered throughout the nation with in the people's heart.

3. There are various other parents who have lost their children with the same reason or manut other reasons. There are various different resources out there for bereaved parents that we could connect them to, such as articles written but different parents in the memory of their child, or writing a book explaining about their child's death, or even opening an organization where they will help the other parents cope up with the situation through which they have been through.

4. The thought or feelings that evokes inside me after hearing of a physically healthy typing mam, who has so much loving support and manut resources, killing himself is sad and disappointed. the people commit suicide because of either not being able to get what they want or not being able to fulfill their wish to make their parents proud. It is very difficult to understand an adult's perspective and his feelings which makes it very difficult for us to identify when is he sad or depressed because of which we neglect to identify the real problem within them. So I feel sad for those people who has everything but are still unhappy. And I feel disappointed as well because a person has his entire life ahead of him with which he can make it possible to get anything he want although it might take time to do so but in the end he will get what he wished for and they fail to understand this fact.
