Spiritual differences

Spiritual differences are the differences of the non-material aspects of life, focusing on personal insight, values, meanings and purpose. Every person would have had the opportunity to experience the “awe and wonder” of life. People would develop a zest for life and the courage and ability to persevere, overcoming any inner resistance and vacillation when approaching obstacles. They must develop the desire to use and extend what they learnt in life. A person's perspective on life may be informed by a religious belief, but equally may not.

Ethnic differences

Ethnic differences involves supporting patients to make considered choices around their behaviour and the values that provide a choice for how they choose to live. Ethnic differences would mean also learning about society’s values, understanding the reasons for them, how they are derived and change; and how disagreements are resolved. We should consider the consequences of personal and societal decisions on the wider community – local and global- and on the environment and future generations.

Social differences

Social differences helps individuals to work effectively together, developing the inter-personal skills required to relate positively with their peers and people of all ages. A person must also understand how to participate productively in a diverse and plural society and learn about, and how to effectively engage with societal institutions and processes. They should understand that a person may have different roles and responsibilities within society, for example, parent, carer, employer, employee.

Cultural differences help people to understand, feel comfortable with, value and appreciate the potential enrichment of cultural diversity. They should challenge discrimination, whether based on cultural or racial difference. A person should experience cultural traditions embedded in arts, crafts, language, literature, theatre, song, music, dance, sport, Science, technology and travel. A person should develop an appreciation of beauty both in experiencing artistic expression and by exploring their own creative powers.
