Yes, the empirical formula of compound will be the same if you use a different mass of magnesium metal. This is because the empirical formula does not depend of the mass of magnesium metal used, the empitical formula indicates the minimal proportion between the elements in a compound. This means that the proportion between Mg and Oxygen it will be always the same, if you change the mass of Mg, then the mass of oxygen that reacts will change.
