1. Generic name- Digoxin

Brand name- Lanoxin

Classification of medication- cardiac glycosides

Dosage- 0.05mg/ml

Routes- oral or IV

Indication- Heart failure, atrial fibrillation

Action of medication- Increases force of contraction of heart muscles by inhibiting the activity of ATPase enzyme that is responsible for controlling movement of calcium, potassium.

Side effects / adverse effects- dizziness, anxiety, headache, rash, weakness, delirum.

Contraindications- hypersensitivity, uncontrolled ventricular arrhytmias, AV block, pericarditis and alcohol intolerance.

Nursing implications- advise patient to avoid taking antidiarrheals for 2 hours on digoxin administration .

Desired outcomes- helps maintain normal, steady and strong heart rate.

2. Generic name- Pentobarbital

Brand name- Nembutal

Classification of medication- non-selective central nervous system depressants

Dosage- 2 to 6 mg per kg,

Routes- IM or IV

Indication- sedative, hypnotic,pareanesthetics, anticonvulsant, status epilepticus

Action of medication- this drug propofol into the GABA receptors and activated advanced GACA binding and opens transmembrane chloride channels that results in cellular hyperpolarization with CNS.

Side effects / adverse effects- ataxia, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, apnea, hypotension, syncope, nausea, constipation, angioedema

Contraindications- haptic damage, hepatic coma, pregnancy

Nursing implications- patient with history of bleeding should not use this drug

Desired outcomes- helps relax nervous excitability and acts as good sedative and hypnotics..
