Limit variable on Ventilator

Ventilator: It is a machine that provides oxygen to a patient ( mechanical ventilation) who is unable to breath on their own. This device slowly pushes the breathable air into lungs and assist the patient in his breathing process including the expiration of Carbon dioxide from the body.

Definition of limit variable on Ventilator :

Limit variables are the settings which limit or constrain the parameters, that set during the inspiratory phase of a mechanical breath. Limit variables also called target variables and it represents the highest limit which the parameter can attain during a mechanical breath's inspiratory phase. But an inspiratory phase doesn't end with this.

The main limit variables that use in a mechanical ventilator are ;

Flow limits ( when the gas flow in the circuit attain the prescribed highest value )

Pressure limits( high initial flow rate of gas results in the attainment of pressure limit. Even then inspiratory phase continues by maintaining the pressure through decreasing the flow)

Volume limits ( a specified volume is set in the ventilator. Inspiratory flow stops ,   When volume limit is met.
