Answer #1

Answer: The data is given where x is the explanatory variable denoting he ages at inauguration and y be the response variable denoting the death.

The data is plotted and we see that--

a) There is clustering of data in a specific region with no linear structure in the data, so, it is not suitable to carry out a linear regression.

b) The coefficient of determination r2 = 0.1245, since it is much less, so it is not appropriate to use a linear regression.

c) The % of variation in the observed values of the response variable that is explained by the linear regression is 12.45%. Since it is the obtained value of r2 is 0.1245 and by definition of r2 we know that it represents the amount of variation in the observed values of the response variable that is explained by the linear regression.

d) As the % of variation explained by linear regression is only 12.45%, and also on seeing the plotted graph of y against x, we can say that it is not suitable to carry out linear regression.

[The graph and the answer is obtained using R-software. Code and output are attached below.]

R-code:

#x=ages at inauguration y=death
x=c(55,61,56,57,58,56,6,50,66,53,43,64,48,48,63,46,56,46,56,46,51,45,51,57,57,42,45,49,57,46,55,49,59,63,39,57,53,60,69)
y=c(67,90,83,85,73,80,78,79,68,71,53,65,74,64,77,56,66,63,70,49,57,71,67,71,58,60,72,67,75,60,90,63,88,78,46,64,81,93,93)
plot(x,y)
summary(lm(y~x))
