Answer #1

The correct answer is- An inherited translocation involving chromosome 21 from the mother.

Down syndrome is also called trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder which leads to birth defects in infants such as learning problem, low IQ and defect in facial features. Considering when a normal childbirth a sperm with 23 chromosomes fertilizes an egg with 23 chromosomes making a set of 46 chromosomes in the child, thus a child born has genes half from father and a half from mother. Sometimes an egg or sperm might keep both the copies of chromosome 21 thus giving rise to a child with 3 copies of 21 chromosomes, therefore called trisomy 21. There are cases wherein the extra 21 chromosome might get attached to another chromosome in the egg or sperm causing translocation trisomy 21, only conditions wherein this disease in inherited from any of the parent.
