Definition : the term co occuring disorder replaces the terms dual disorder and dual diagnosis when referring to an individual who has a co existing mental illness and substance Use disorder .while commonly used to refer to the combination of substance Use and mental disorders ,the term also refer to other combinations of disorders .

Prevalence : the 2016 national survey on drug Use and health found that approximately 8.2 million american adults (3.4%) had a mental illness as well as a substance Use disorder within the past year .

2) substance induced mood disorder :

  • Substance induced mood disorder is a change in the way you think ,feel or add caused by taking or stopping a drug .these changes in mood can last days or weeks .Causes and risk factors :
  • Family history of addiction or any psychiatric disorders .
  • People who are not having family support
  • Poor parenting
  • Peer group encouragement to alcohol
  • Low socio economic status .
  • Unemployment ,divorse etc .
  • The brain makes chemicals that affect thoughts ,emotions and actions .without the right balance of these chemicals there may be problems with the way you think ,feel or act .
  • Many drugs change the amountamounts of these chemicals
  • Some drugs can cause mood problems while you are taking them
  • Other drugs can cause mood problems For a week to several weeks after you stop taking them .
  • Drugs and medicines that can cause problems includes :
  1. Alcohol and illegal drugs such as cocaine and LSD .
  2. Nonprescription medicines such as some decongestants .
  3. Prescription medicines such as those to treatment heart problems ,High bp ,anti anxiety medicines ,antidepressants ,pain medications and others etc .
