Then carboxylic acid is soluble in sodium biacarbonate solution to produce the sodium carboxylate salt.

Phenols are soluble in the strong base like NaOH going to produce the sodium phenoxide ions.

then bipthenyl is neutral which is present in the ether layer and subjected to evaporate the ether to get biphenyl molecule.
