QUESTION: You are given a meterstick and asked to drill a small hole through it so that, when the stick is pivoted about a horizontal axis through the hole, the period of the pendulum will be a minimum. Where should you drill the hole?(give the distance from the end of the meterstick) Hint: The rotational inertia I of the pendulum can be calculated using the parallel axis theorem.

This step is worth (1.5 points) if consistent with the diagram, or (0 points) if there is no diagram.

5) In your mind estimate the answer you’re looking for and think about units.

6) Select a relationship (general principle and equation) between the known quantities and the unknown. A general equation or principle is one of the end-of-chapter equations; it can not be a formula derived for a different/previous problem or a formula found on the internet or any other source. (It is a good idea to become familiar with the end-of-chapter equations, as those are the only equations provided for exam). Write the general equation first. In the general equation, substitute your variables from step 4 above. This step is worth (1.5 points)

7) Solve for the unknown variable, showing all the intermediate algebraic steps. Use symbolic notation (not numbers) during this step. (0.5 points)

8) Once you derived a final formula, plug in numbers and units and come up with the answer.
