Ways to encourage increased participation of aboriginal people in the information session

Aboriginal people are the ones who are living in the land before the colonization of foreigners. They are the indigenous people of the land. Torress strait are living in the land of Australian islands. Effective Communication some times is difficult with the aboriginal and Torres island people because of the significant differences in culture, the pattern of behaviour and language.

There are different ways to encourage increased participation of the Aboriginal and Torres islanders in the information session. Some are the following measures:

1) Establishe a rapport with them

Unless building a rapport and trust between the health professional and islanders, it is difficult for establishing and effective communication. As far as possible use the language that understand by them. Welcome them warmly by a smile and don't use any loud voice. Speak with them gently.

2. Make use of a staff from aboriginal community

A staff from their own community makes them more relaxed and comfortable otherwise they may be in shame or fear to give information.

3. Effective communication with respect.

Give and take respect: Keep a respect in your heart for their culture and people, then it will be easy to express the same. Respect for elders are more appreciated in those communities. While communicating, actively listen to them, then an interviewer can read more than words from them. Use indirect questions more than the direct questions. Gender divisions are common in aboriginal and islanders so preferably a female staff can attend a female client.
