Aboriginal and Torres straits Islanders

Aboriginal people are the indigenous people, who were living in the land before the colonization of foreigners. Torres straits Islanders people are the ones who have living in the islands of Australia. It is difficult to get health information from them and to do intervention for the islanders and Aboriginals as there is are significant differences in culture and patterns of behaviour between the health professionals and Aboriginal Torres islanders.

Different ways to encourage increased participation of the Aboriginal people and Torres straits Islanders in information session are following:

1. Establish a rapport and effective communication

It is important that a rapport should be established before the information session with the aboriginal and Torres islanders as they were hesitant and shy to speak with the strangers. Use the language that can be understood by them. Welcome them warmly by a smile and use a gentle tone for talking to them. Trust should be developed in them about the healthcare professionals.

2. Use a staff member from their own community in the team

Make use a staff member from their own community in the information session with the aboriginal and Torres island people as they feel comfortable when a person from them is also there in the health team. Preferably a female can attend a female staff and male can attend by a male staff as the gender sensitivity is strongly existing in them.

3. Give respect and take respect

A good understanding about their culture will give a clear awareness about their pattern of behaviour and respect for the elders. The respect towards other culture should be there within the health professionals, then it will be easy for expressing it.

4. The technique of questioning, observing and listening

If you listen and observe properly, then you will get more information that even not expressed by the speakers. Use less direct approach in questioning. Open ended questions may results in more response than the close ended questions.

Self determination and health control in aboriginals and Torres straits Islanders can be increased by proper therapeutic communication and health promotion activities that ensure the participation of the Aboriginal people. They should feel that they are respected and listened by the health team and follow up sessions also must ensure.
