Immunity is defined as the body’s defence mechanism against infections, disease and other pathogens.

Immunity is of two types :

1. Innate

2. Acquired

Vaccination provides acquired immunity. It is an example artificial acquired immunity.

A newborn receives antibodies from the mother’s milk is a type of active acquired immunity. The colostrum contains IgA antibodies which help newborn fight against infections.

Vaccination is the process of administering vaccine (live, attenuated or dead antigen) in the body to stimulate the body’s immune response and develop adaptive immunity against that pathogen.

Vaccination helps to protect the body against infectious diseases like mumps, rubella, measles.

Example of a vaccine includes MMR vaccine against mumps, measles and rubella.
