Organizational Behavior (OB) may be defined as the field of study that examines the influence of an individual or group of individual’s behavior and the structural behavior they have within an organization. Organizational Behavior researchers study the behavior of individuals primarily in their organizational roles. In other words, Organizational Behavior is the study of human behavior in organizational settings, the interface between human behavior and the organization, and the organization itself. One of the primary reasons for organizational behavior is to revitalize organizational theory and develop a better conceptualization of organizational life. It is necessary to study organizational behavior because it helps us understand why people behave as they do in organizations.
The earlier studies of Organizational Behavior can be dated back to the time of Max Weber and few other scholars who studied earlier organizations. Right from the times of industrial revolution in the 17th century to the scientific management in the 18th century, OB has evolved and concentrates more on Human relations within an organization. Organizational behavior has been influenced by advancements made in a number of similar disciplines like sociology, psychology, economics, and engineering as well as by the knowledge of practitioners. Many scholars that include Henri Fayol and Abraham Maslow have contributed to the development to the study of Organizational Behavior.
