It is very important to have a well-defined project timeline generally presented in Gantt charts for a project as these timelines the project is broken down into milestones and one is able to have a metric for reviewing the performance and thus the risks of not having a project timeline is lack of metrics for judging the progress and performance of the team that is responsible for the project. One not being in a position to know the critical path of the project and hence the risk of not completing the project in time.
