Question
a) Explain the mathematical relationship between Weight and City MPG based on the linear correlation coefficient. Be certain to include comments about the magnitude and the direction of the correlation.
b) Compare and contrast the correlations for weight and braking distance with that of weight and city MPG. How are they similar and how are they different?

Answer #1

a) Mathematically, there is a linear relationship between Weight and City MPG, from the scatter plot we can see, the slope of the line is negative (for smaller x values; y is higher and for higher values of x; y has higher values), so there will be a negative correlation between this two variables, also most of the (almost all) points are closer to the line magnitude of the line will be high (in -0.9 to -1). Scatter plot shows strong negative correlation between Weight and City MPG.

b) For this part, need to see the scatter plot of weight and distance to compare it with scatter plot in a.
